Vitamin D is both a nutrient we eat and a hormone made by our bodies.  Because very few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D, the best dietary sources of vitamin D are fortified foods and vitamin supplements.

For most people, taking a vitamin D supplement is the best way to ensure adequate levels of vitamin D. In order to determine if you have adequate levels of vitamin D, have your doctor or health care provider check a vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy Level.
If your doctor recommends supplementation for vitamin D deficiency, have your lab levels of vitamin D monitored periodically.

The body also makes vitamin D through sunlight absorption, hence the term “the sunshine vitamin.” However, some people use sunscreens or do not get enough vitamin D from the sun. Those with darker skin tones, the elderly, and being overweight may also hinder absorption.

Reports on vitamin D and newer research can be confusing because of the way studies are done. More research is underway with randomized trials enrolling thousands of people.

Supports Healthy Bones and Improves Muscle Strength

According to several studies, vitamin D supplementation, as long as it is consumed in a high enough dose, may help bone strength. Vitamin D may also help increase muscle strength, which helps reduce falls, which is a common problem in the elderly.

Assists In Heart Health

The heart muscle also has receptors for vitamin D. Studies have found that vitamin D plays a role in controlling vascular pressure and preventing damage to the artery. However, more research is needed.

Supports Immune Health

Multiple studies are underway regarding vitamin D’s effect on immune function. Assisting in blood sugar control and boosting our body’s defenses against respiratory infections are hot topics amongst research that is still emerging.
